Last week Claude Haynes of EVAC spoke with Sheryl Cormack of the Tonto NFS
management. She was very supportive of EVAC and the astronomy effort as
well as any other nightime uses (such as the Arizona Highways photo
workshops) that are using the Picketpost Mountain Trailhead.
She agreed that the gate to the parking lot would remain unlocked as long as
there are legitimate night sky people in the parking lot.
Those wanting to observe at Picketpost should:
1. Get there before sunset if possible...you will find the gate open.
2. If you stay late (as most of us do) you may find the gate closed but
unlocked and you can open the gate and close it again behind you.
3. If you must arrive very late and there is no one else there, the gate may
be locked. The host has his motorhome in the middle of the site near the
rest rooms. If he is still awake, he may unlock the gate for you.
4. If all else fails, set up at one of other clearings along the road in.
