> Has anyone had any experience with the Orion Star Shoot Auto Guider ? Paul's numbers for calibration sound about right based upon my experience with PHD Guiding and a Starlight Xpress Lodestar. Calibration time probably doesn't depend much upon the camera, but rather the time required to determine drift directions. I've not used the Orion camera, but Tom Polakis reported a while back that one he had compared poorly to other guide cameras due to low sensitivity. Best choices at present are probably the SBIG ST-i, Loderstar and, presumably, the recently introduced Lodestar X2. Certainly one major improvement to the new Lodestar is the change from a tiny little 4-pin connector on the guide port to a standard 6P6C (RJ25) jack. You will want to be sure your guide 'scope and primary optical system are rigidly coupled (which includes removing any play in the focuser on the guiding system), and that all the various cables involved are secured so nothing shifts during tracking. You may also find a need to adjust your drive mechanism. One of the first things a lot of people encounter as they bring up an auto-guiding system is that backlash in the declination axis can be a challenge. -- Mike -- -- cal_donley@xxxxxxx -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
