Do you guys worry about sitting out in the middle of no where with several
thousand dollars with of equipment? I can’t decide if it’s better to be in a
public
area or off by myself where no one is likely to find me.
I think of "no one is likely to find me" as a good thing for astronomy, and "in
a public area" as bad, unless your intention is to do outreach. Regarding
safety, back in the day, I spent many hundreds of hours observing alone (and
unarmed) at remote sites, and never had a problem. It's unlikely that anybody
is going to find you, much less come after your expensive equipment, which
would be difficult to haul away and has next to zero pawn value.
