Hmm, I have been doing this for quite some time now, (20 + years off and
on) and never had any issues with wildlife, or people, except for their
lights. I think the fears are over blown.
As far as dark sites are concerned, I have used PicketPost, and Massacre
grounds for deep sky imaging, and as long as you restrict yourself to the
appropriate areas of the sky (Generally just east of the Meridian) I think
you can get some great results. Judge for yourself:

That being said, it's always a good idea to have someone else out there
with you if possible just in case your car breaks down or something like
that, but I wouldn't let that hold you back if you cant find anyone to go
with you that evening.
