I'm not sure about the 5 SE, but a friend of mine bought a Nextstar 8 and had lots of trouble getting used to the goto operation. The problem is this: Rather than shaft encoders on the RA and Dec, these scopes use the shaft position of the servo motors for reference, but the motors are followed by a gear train with lash. To take up the play, or lash, the instructions require that alignment stars be moved to the center of the field from a specific known direction using the hand controller (like lower right, for instance). After that the scope approaches objects accordingly. Also, the internal batteries were drained within 20 minutes, so an external battery was needed. Optically the scope is very good. - Paul Lind ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ken Sikes" <KGSikes@xxxxxxx> To: "AZ Observing List" <az-observing@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, May 04, 2008 8:25 AM Subject: [AZ-Observing] Nexstar Telescopes > Hello everyone, > I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Celestron's Nextstar > series telescopes.
