I thought I said that, but it looks like I wasn't clear. Essentially NGS software will upload waypoints & routes. Somewhere in this discussion I did mention proprietary software. As for auto routing features, I'm sure if I had it, I'd never go back, but for the $150 -$250 range, you're not going to find that. For the purposes Thad is looking to use a GPS for, that may be overkill. I've been reading this GPS discussion with interest. First, I need to clarify something about Garmin GPS receivers: > If a Garmin product has this specification..... > > I can upload maps to it from the NG software? The answer is, unfortunately, no. You will be able to upload waypoints, which is pretty useful. But in order to update maps, you need Garmin's software. This is because they keep the mapping features and interfaces proprietary. I think most GPS manufacturers do the same. With that said, Garmin's maps are pretty good. A couple years ago, I owned a Garmin Vista. It was a pretty good unit - until I lost it. :-) About a year ago, I replaced the Vista with a Garmin GPS60CS. This thing is fantastic! One feature that was of interest was auto-routing. Since I've used the 60CS on a number of trips, I can't imagine how I got along without auto routing! :-) The Windows software (yes it's extra) lets you select which area(s) to download to the 60CS. Then you can use various tools on the 60CS to "find" things of interest. For example, you might want it to find your hotel, or local restaurants. Once you pick a specific point from the list, it allows you to display it on the map or, even better, generates a route to the location. When I was on a trip to Yuma, I used it to find hotels (hadn't booked one ahead of time). Since the entries include telephone numbers, I used my cell to call around and find a place to stay. Then the 60CS "took me there". Way cool. You can read about the unit here: http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap60cs/ I recommend the following software: http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/cityselect.jsp http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/topo.jsp Last but not least, here is probably one of the BEST sources on the Web for GPS info: http://gpsinformation.net/ They wrote a review of the GPS60C a while back: http://gpsinformation.us/gps60c/g60review.html I s'pose I should give the standard disclaimer. I'm not involved in any of these web sites or companies, other than as a satisfied customer. :-) Enjoy! -- Jim On 2005-06-07 5:24 PM, "Rick Tejera" <saguaroastro@xxxxxxx> wrote: > Short Answer , Yes.
