Andrew,

It can be a bit confusing as Garmin's proprietary software is called Topo.
National Geographic's software is called backroads explorer, but the
individual state packages are called TOPO! The NGS software puts an icon
called TOPO! On your desktop regardless of the version you are using. Both
NGS products will work well with a NMEA Compliant unit. You can download &
upload waypoints & routes from the software to the GPSr. Note though, that
in order to get the street level mapping capabilities, you would need the
proprietary software. Both Magellan & Garmin offer several versions. Street
mapping software is just that, it will have streets and points of interest.
Topo mapping will have the topographic data including contour line s &
elevations as well. I have Mapsend Streets for the Magellan and while it
doesn't have the level of detail a topo map has, it does show lots of dirt
roads & trails. Had all of the FRS roads we traveled on this weekend while
caching, and it's a bit cheaper than the topo software.

NGS BRE can be had at Costco (if they still have it, I think they do) for
$39.95. 17 disk including all 50 states. The individual state packages are
about $100.00 ea

Proprietary software ranges from about $70-$150- depending on the version &
source.

When looking at the Garmin site there was a link for US-TOPO and national
parks west. Will these show the forest service roads or as Thad says did you
get them from national geographic? See the site, Thad you can zoom in for
examples of the topo maps from their site. I only went there because
Sportsman's Warehouse was having a sale last weekend. see this one.
