I'll go with the lens flare explanation. If you pull that image into an
editor and boost the gamma you'll see a vertical line of 3-4 circles
near the center bottom. The fact that they line up with the weird effect
at the top, and that they ALL line up with the bright light source
off-image at the center bottom, reinforces that hypothesis. If it was a
rocket staging, I think you'd see more of a track above/below and not
just the separation. The colors also seem "spectral" ... unlike what
you'd get with typical fuels venting. My question is: Did the
photographer see this in the sky with his eyes? Or was he just shooting
the Milky Way and discovered this "artifact" later?

Does anyone know what this is? My guess is he captured a meteor just as it
was exploding in the atmosphere. If I am not mistaken, I think that may also
be M31 just to the left of the object. I would be interested in what others
think. I think the dude has an APOD on his hands if this is what I think it
is.
