I don't think I agree, generally, though I certainly understand why you didn't 
click the link. The challenge should be clear that it's NOT spam or phishing of 
its own, but I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

But really, you can't stop spam from using any of the methods you mention.

If people don't respond to the challenge, then you won't get their email. 
They'll usually find another way to get to you, if it's important. You did.
