Hi Steve
I have never tried tweaking the buffer setting. I reread the section in the
manual and they warn that increasing runs the risk of pushing the computer too
hard. You will only find out what is too much by trying.
I would be surprised if reinstalling would make a difference. I am also
surprised that you have not encountered the issue previously. David may
comment, but I doubt that this version of Audacity uses much, if, any, more
computer power than previous versions.
As Robert pointed out, other processes the computer is taking care of can
affect your latency results. When I run the test repeatedly on the six year
old machine, I get minor variations. How large are your variations? Enough to
mess up the singing of harmonies or putting instruments out of time?
You have probably taken care of this already, but the distance you place your
microphone from the speaker will also affect the latency test.

Hi Andrew and Robert. First of all, thanks so much for your suggestions. Robert
is correct; each time I open up a new project I have to adjust the latency to
make the tracks align as best they can. There are two settings involving
latency in the preferences menu. The latency buffer and then the latency
setting. Should I be messing with the latency buffer setting as well or just
the latency setting? I really haven't had this problem before until I
downloaded the latest version of Audacity. Do you think deleting and
re-downloading Audacity would help? Thanks for any advice and you guys have a
great day.
Steve

Andrew, I doubt that Steve means that the already existing tracks have moved
but rather that recording a new track will be off again.
That is really a problem, the more tracks (especially with overdub enabled),
the bigger the latency or at least the variance of it.
Apart from that, I've always said that each host configuration should have it's
own latency profile.

Apologies for my slackness in replying. Part of my excuse was that I
spent some time revisiting my latency settings.
As Robert noted, the amount of latency will vary from time to time,
which is not optimal. All things being somewhere near equal,
variation should not be huge, but is detectable.
On this machine I need to provide about double the value when using
Windows Direct Sound compared to wasapi and the variation is much less
when using wasapi.
If I understand you correctly Steve, you are saying that a reopened
file is different to when it was saved. That is most odd.

Hi, the click track does not wander. However, the recording hasn't a
repeatable, static latency.
It all depends on what is running in the background, e.g. an automatic
update might cause Audacity to start the recording later because the
CPU was trapped in the other thread.
Maybe you could adjust the priority settings for Audacity in the task
manager.

Hi Andrew and thanks for responding. What I have been doing is using
the click and creating a second track with a mic recording the click
track as laid out in the manual. When I have the track alinement as
close as I can get it, I had closed the program out and then reopened
it a short time later only to find that the recordings aren't lined
up like they were previously.
Then, I reintroduced the click and repeated the procedure to align
the tracks. Can you tell me how to tell if it is the click that
changes during this process as you had said that sometimes the click
track wanders? Thanks for any help, Steve.

Hi Steve
When restarting Audacity are you finding that the latency values you
set have changed or is it that the values are the same but click
track results are not satisfactory? I have not had a problem with
settings not being saved. I have, however, restarted Audacity and
found the click track result to wander. I suspect it may depend on
what other applications are running and perhaps the mood of the
machine. It is a long time since I adjusted for latency and cannot
remember how I arrived at a satisfactory setting. It was probably a
matter of repeating the process until achieving a consistent result.
Yes, a tad tedious.

Hello. I'm having trouble with saving a latency setting. Using the
latest Audacity. When I have the setting right for latency and close
audacity, then reopen it and perform the same test with using a click
track, the timing is off. Using Jaws 2018 and Windows 10. Thanks for
any help. Sorry I had to hijack someone else's email but couldn't
find an email with posting instructions.
