Fantastic! Both worked! Shift + C works now. And in fact it seems my mic was
muted somehow. I don’t know how it got muted, but I tested in Voice Recorder
(forgot about that), then I tinkered with sound settings until it started
working. I’m not sure what I did to get the mic working, but it seems to now,
including in Audacity. Sorry – I guess I’ve been pretty incompetent about PC
mic related stuff.
You’ve been great. Take it easy!
😊

Hi Trevor
I think I can solve the shift+c issue. Audacity, for a reason that completely
escapes me, does not turn on all keyboard commands by default. With the
standard setting, shift+c does not do anything. Open Preferences with
control+p. Press k for keyboard. Tab until you reach the Defaults button.
Press spacebar and arrow to full and press Enter. Then tab to ok and press
Enter again.
Glad you have discovered the peak level meters, as they are most helpful. Note
that with the record meter if you are not yet recording you need to press the
Application key and arrow to Start Monitoring. Furthermore, with JAWS you have
to tab away from the meter and back to read a change.
I wonder if the mic has become muted. I just checked and, with it muted,
Audacity will still show a decent level. Worth checking under the record tab
in sounds to see if it is muted. Also try recording something with Voice
Recorder. And also worth checking in the input dialog in Audacity to make sure
there is not another input option.
I wondered about headphones interfering. I tried with my notebook and,
somewhat to my surprise, with earphones connected Audacity accepted input from
the inbuilt mic.

Subject: [audacity4blind] Re: Simple problem with Deleting and Recording
Hi Gang, Andrew et al.
Thanks – I forgot to give those specs. I am using JAWS 2018 with Windows 10. It
is Audacity 2.4.2. The computer is a laptop. I have no mic to plug in, so I
should be using the built in one. Might headphones be interfering? I’ve not
gotten any recorded sound with or without headphones plugged in. It’s been a
couple months since I’ve tried the mic out elsewhere, but it has worked, and
Windows says it is working.
Shift + c does not seem to do anything after I select a track, nor does
pressing the delete button. JAWS says the track is selected after I enter, and
it unselects when I enter again as it should. I’ve been using the toolbar for
input/output levels. Currently, for example, the playback volume is 26, and
recording volume is 54. I’ve tried tooling with the monitor in the Record
Meter, which doesn’t seem to tell me anything. The button says peak -60DB, as
does the Play Meter. This doesn’t change.
Any ideas why I’m apparently not able to record sound, or delete tracks? Hope
this info helps.
Unfortunately, I just joined the list and missed the earlier discussion on
selecting audio.
Thanks!
Trevor

Hi Trevor
Sounds like you are tantalisingly close. Incidentally, choice of screen reader
should not be an issue here.
Are you using a desktop or laptop? Laptops can get a bit tricky with their
combo mic/earphone sockets. If the following does not help, can you give us a
bit more info about your system. Oh, and no need to apologise for asking
questions. Getting a handle on the details of sound devices can involve a
quite long learning curve.
That you are getting playback to work is encouraging. It is now just a matter
of sorting out the recording device.
Are you setting input and output through Preferences or through the toolbar.
If the toolbar, you can check the recording level. From the tracks panel,
press control+shift+f6. Shift-tab a few times to set output, input and host.
Keep shift-tabbing to check playback and recording levels. Adjust recording
level if very low. Press control+f6 to get back to the tracks panel.
Re the possibly related issue, apologies if covering what you already know.
Arrowing up and down moves you from track to track. However, to do most things
with the current track it must be selected. Pressing Enter will toggle
selection of the track. That is, select it if not selected and deselect it if
selected. Even then, you have not selected any audio on the track. You can
delete an entire track by arrowing to it and pressing shift+c. Control+z will
undo if you regret the decision.
There has been recent discussion here regarding selecting audio. Let us know
if you missed that.

Subject: [audacity4blind] Simple problem with Deleting and Recording
Hi List,
I’m a beginner to Audacity. Apologies about this being juvenilia, but When I
click R and shift + R to record, then press space to listen back, I do not hear
anything. I’ve tried playing with the adjustments, including sound outputs.
Actually, I do see that the audio position is changing – time is passing on the
track I’ve generated. I am able to listen to the content of imported files I
did not create with Audacity. Any ideas why this is?
I am using Speakers/Headphones (Realtech) as my playback device, and Microphone
Array (Realtech) is my recording device. Windows 10 tells me they are working.
MME is the Audio host.
On a possibly related note, I am not able to delete files tracks I’ve generated
or imported, even after I select them, including by way of entering, select
all, etc. I am told “no audio selected.”
Any ideas you have in mind? To summarize, I’m trying to simultaneously listen
to an imported file, which I’m able to do, and record a new track with shift +
R, which creates a new track with evidently no sound.
I very much appreciate it.
Best,
Trevor
