Sounds like you are tantalisingly close. Incidentally, choice of screen
reader should not be an issue here.
Are you using a desktop or laptop? Laptops can get a bit tricky with their
combo mic/earphone sockets. If the following does not help, can you give us
a bit more info about your system. Oh, and no need to apologise for asking
questions. Getting a handle on the details of sound devices can involve a
quite long learning curve.
That you are getting playback to work is encouraging. It is now just a
matter of sorting out the recording device.
Are you setting input and output through Preferences or through the toolbar.
If the toolbar, you can check the recording level. From the tracks panel,
press control+shift+f6. Shift-tab a few times to set output, input and
host. Keep shift-tabbing to check playback and recording levels. Adjust
recording level if very low. Press control+f6 to get back to the tracks
panel.
Re the possibly related issue, apologies if covering what you already know.
Arrowing up and down moves you from track to track. However, to do most
things with the current track it must be selected. Pressing Enter will
toggle selection of the track. That is, select it if not selected and
deselect it if selected. Even then, you have not selected any audio on the
track. You can delete an entire track by arrowing to it and pressing
shift+c. Control+z will undo if you regret the decision.
There has been recent discussion here regarding selecting audio. Let us
know if you missed that.

Hi List,
I'm a beginner to Audacity. Apologies about this being juvenilia, but When I
click R and shift + R to record, then press space to listen back, I do not
hear anything. I've tried playing with the adjustments, including sound
outputs. Actually, I do see that the audio position is changing - time is
passing on the track I've generated. I am able to listen to the content of
imported files I did not create with Audacity. Any ideas why this is?
I am using Speakers/Headphones (Realtech) as my playback device, and
Microphone Array (Realtech) is my recording device. Windows 10 tells me they
are working. MME is the Audio host.
On a possibly related note, I am not able to delete files tracks I've
generated or imported, even after I select them, including by way of
entering, select all, etc. I am told "no audio selected."
Any ideas you have in mind? To summarize, I'm trying to simultaneously
listen to an imported file, which I'm able to do, and record a new track
with shift + R, which creates a new track with evidently no sound.
