Hi Steve
I love the feature of Audacity I am about to describe. With focus on the
track, press the Applications key. Arrow down to Split Stereo Track or,
perhaps better for your purposes, Split Stereo to Mono. Split Stereo Track
will give you two mono tracks with the original amount of pan. Split Stereo
to Mono will give you two mono tracks with both tracks being centred. That
will give you your second option of both sources coming through both
channels. In either case, you can pan each track to where you want it with
shift-p.
To eliminate the music, simply mute that track with shift-u or delete the
track.
One issue you may encounter is if there is some splash over between the
tracks. In that case, you may for example hear some faint music behind the
speaking or vice versa.

Hello List,
I'm using version 2.1.3. I have a prerecorded stereo track that has one
channel of music and the other channel as talking. I would like to know
how to go about eliminating the music channel leaving just the talking. I'd
also like to know how to combine the tracks so that the music and talking
play through both channels. For this second option I've tried importing
the track, going to preferences and switching to mono and exporting. There
was no difference. Thanks in advance for any advice.
