You mentioned that you learned how to adjust the speed if a recording
speed is jacked up. Could you please explain how you do that? I also
like to collect old recordings, and it drives me crazy when the speed
isn't right.

That is a challenge and it takes practice to get the speed fixed, but it's
doable if you think it needs doing.

You do need to import the files into audacity.
If you hit Menu bar, the first menu is the "File menu." Arrow down to
import.
You have to give your file a name, or copy in the name if it already has
one.
Importing is somewhat quicker than exporting.
Beyond this, I hope the tutorials can help.
