That's correct, you have a "Sound Font" installed for the Microsoft GS
wavetable in the system folder (and it could potentially be replaced).
That's of course not the same as the hardware fonts used in SoundBlaster cards.
Nowadays, you load  a virtual MIDI device and some sound font with it
(SF2 files).
I use BassMIDI for that, other might use Cool Edit instead. There's
also SoundFontOne. And to beat it, there's also the Vienna soundfont
editor from the same manufacturer, oddly enough, almost the same name
as the editor for the original SoundBlaster fonts (I never  know which
one is which).
Cheers
Robert

Audacity does not have a MIDI synthesizer. If you have either a software
MIDI synth, or a hardware synth connected to the computer via MIDI, then
you can configure Audacity to use the synth in "Preferences > MIDI
Devices".

Windows includes a MIDI synth by default which is accessed via the "MIDI
Mapper" option.

Mac and Linux do not provide a MIDI synth by default, so you will need to
provide one if you wish to use MIDI playback.

Audacity's MIDI capabilities are only very basic. Simple Cut / Copy / Paste
editing is supported, as is MIDI playback, and that's about all.

Since Audacity can't play vst, what is the purpose of the midi
section in
preferences? Thanks for clarification.

                      Hi Michael

I put any effect files into
C:\Users\Andrew\AppData\Roaming\audacity\Plug-Ins (replace Andrew with your
username).  I do not have any vst files in Audacity, but assume they would
also go there.  Remember to go to the Effects Menu and enable the new
files.

that work with Audacity. for some reason, I have problem installing them

Can someone tell me how to install VST on my system?

Hope to hear from you soon
