Apart from the inelegance of not working with the final thickness, there is the problem of actually selecting the control points. It looks like there needs to be an option somewhere to 'Lock control points precisely to grid'. That would make life a lot easier. I have a lot more work to do of trying out all the suggestions that have been made to see if they really make this project feasible.
