You might not need very much, if you use one of the MEMS IMUs that Troy
mentioned, which can directly report angles. The early Sidewinders were
very successful with the most boneheaded control approach imaginable: no
active roll control (rollerons for roll damping), plus pitch and yaw
control-surface angles simply set directly proportional to pointing error.
(I expect there was a bit of filtering of the pointing-error signal.)
Guys who'd spent years sweating over control design for other AAMs were
astonished that something so crude worked so well.
