I kept that structure on all subsequent machines up to Iyonix, but
when moving stuff over to ARMX6 (checking each item individually to
see whether it worked, rather than just bulk copying) the distinction
between Apps and Utils in terms of either 'weight', frequency of use
or anything else seemed so blurred that I put everything from both
into structured directories within Apps (not the 'Utilities' though).
I have evolved something similar over the years. But I find no use for
a category Utilities: it's meaningless. All programs have _some_ area
of application and can be categorised accordingly.
(The _only_ reference to directory Utilities in R-Comp's boot is in an
IfThere statement to AddApp !ChangeFSI if it's, er, there. I haven't
found one in ROOL's).
I have moved stuff around to get rid of R-Comp directories Images,
Legacy, Network, Sound, Text, Utilities and Video because their
contents can all be better categorised within Apps or as Data and,
until OS7 updated Sound, I didn't expect automated updates to any of
these.
Of course, one still wants ready access to all applications, so much
use is made here of Look at and Run Boot configure options, but also
of AppDock and multiple instances of Toolbar. Others will have their
pet methods using Director, StrongMen, etc. but the truth is that the
so-called 'magic' Resources:$.Apps is useless for referring to more
than a few of one's most common apps plus the six ROM apps.
There was some discussion of this a while back in
https://www.riscosopen.org/forum/forums/2/topics/2262 but it strayed ;
into the structure of !Boot and how one might better separate system
and user configuration choices. Important issues, but squarely in
ROOL's court. Worth a dip, though, for some other opinions.
As for the category directories within Apps, Packman provides a start,
though I take it further, and have been planning to expand on the
subject in Archive for too long, so please don't hold your breath.
