The other is that if you accumulate a large number of Apps, especially
small utilities that you use infrequently, it is far easier to hunt for the
tool you need by first selecting a folder (say graphics or sound) and then
hunting through the App titles/icons within it trying to find the most
suitable one.
Historically, this is why Acorn differentiated between Apps and Utilities.
Apps was intended to hold key applications (eg. Impression, Artworks,
DataPower, Fireworkz, Eureka etc) whilst Utilities was for the less
commonly used things.
As you've mentioned, Add to Apps was intended to be the solution to
programs that come with lots of "extras" and deserve their own folder.
To be honest, there's no right/wrong way of doing things, and if one
thinks about it, the fact that Utilties is Filer_Booted (ie. things in
there are "seen" by the computer) makes it appropriate for programs with
data files which you might want to double click on (ie. double click an
Ovation Pro file to load Ovation Pro). These are, however, typically
major applications, making it all a bit topsy-turvy.
As you say, there's really not a lot of difference in using sub-folders of
Apps and then "Add-to-apps"-ing them, vs storing them elsewhere and
"Add-to-apps"-ing them. It's probably me just having a knee-jerk "well,
Acorn didn't do folders in Apps, so I won't either" reaction.
One of the best things about RISC OS is that you can (largely) do what you
like with things :)
The following folders should be considered sacresanct really (on any RISC
OS system):
!Boot
Apps
Printing (!Printers normally resides here, and may be !Boot-ed)
Utilities (contents are filer_booted by an ordinary !Boot)
I would not move anything out of !Boot, Printing or Utilities, but I had
never seen Apps in the same light.
Just to be clear, I wasn't referring to the contents of the folders, just
that they are ones which should exist, because they are often referred to
(eg. by !Boot) and are considered part of Acorn's official disc image.
