How to format the SD card of your Android phone?
From the homescreen press Menu > Settings
Scroll to SD & Phone Storage.
As you can see the Format SD card option is grayed out, don't panic.
Tap on Unmount SD card and validate
Tap on Format SD and follow the on-screen procedure.

Thanks, Alan. (And thanks too to others for replies.) I hadn't
imagined the phone itself would be able to reformat the SD card. Your
advice eventually did the trick. Mine is Android 4.4, which is
possibly a later version than that in the advice.
Only on my second or third attempt did I spot tiny print in the
notification area (if that's what Android calls it) at top of screen
saying something like "SD card is faulty; do it anyway?"
Presuming the fault to be the same corruption in the Armini boot
partition that made me get an updated SD card in the first place, I
went ahead and let the phone reformat this old card. Success. The
Android "storage" display now shows the SD card with 32G, which means
the reformatting ignored the old Fat/Ro partitioning (as I hoped) and
it is now one continuous 32G.
New problem now. I download a new app for the phone from Google Play
but it continually fails because of "not enough space" -- despite the
storage report of nearly 32G free space, not to mention many megabytes
free in the internal phone space. A web search seems to show this is
a common Android annoyance -- beyond the scope of this Armini list;
I'll ask elsewhere before the List Cops arrest me.
That's not to say private replies are unwelcome! ;=)
