Richard Torrens (RISC OS) wrote on 9 May:
OK - installing again isn't a problem - but it is, I think, about time
choices like this are stored in choices:printers!
But choices like this *are* stored in Choices:Printers !
Your feeds should be stored as Choices:Printers.ps.Feeds and your
directory within the app (!Printers.ps.Feeds) can be empty.
Just out of curio city, I had a trawl back through ancient versions of
!Printers to see when the Choices.Printers was first introduced.
It was not there in Acorn times (!Printers 1.28c in 1994; 1.53 in
1996).
!Printers 1.62 (Riscos Ltd 1999) runimage mentions
"<Choices$write>.Printers" but I didn't turn up release notes.
The release notes with !Printers 1.64a (Riscos Ltd 2001) start off
thus:
* Choices are now stored within the Choices: system,
rather than internally to !Printers. This means that one
copy of !Printers can be shared easily between many
computers (say on a read-only server) without all the
machines automatically getting the same configuration.
[A standalone !Choices app was provided along with 1.64a for users who
don't have "a modern boot structure" -- I think Riscos Ltd is to be
credited with introducing the modern boot structure.]
Updating !Printers
------------------
It will sometimes be necessary to update !Printers,
either to incorporate upgrades or to modify some support
information to drive a new printer. You should refer in the
first instance to any release notes with the update.
Previous releases of !Printers have suggested adding
files within !Printers as required. This is now STRONGLY
discouraged. There should be no reason whatsoever for any
file within !Printers to be changed by anyone except RISCOS
Ltd.
Given that this is the case it should be possible to
upgrade !Printers just by renaming the old one away (for
safety) and then copying the new !Printers in.
If you feel you have to add a file into the search path
for !Printers then add it into the appropriate directory
within the "Choices:" structure (typically
!Boot.Choices.Printers).
!Printers 1.72 (Castle 2004) mentions <Choices$write>.Printers within
its runimage (written in Basic) but I can find no release notes, and
there's nothing about it in !Help -- which in fact is the identical
2003 !Help file, a mere 258 bytes, that we still see in the latest
!Printers (Rool 2018). Unfortunately the new RiscOS 5 User Guide
doesn't really nail Richard's question either, nothing like the
"STRONGLY discouraged" from 2001.
