I have looked at moving to Manjaro but I believe the latest version for
the Pinebook though built on a later Ubuntu base it is still at KDE 5.19.
So I guess it may be best to wait for an official Pinebook Remix version
of KDE 5.20?
I keep assuming there will be a new "remix" for original Pinebook, but it
hasn't yet appeared. A sceptic might comment that the Pine-guys' focus
has likely moved to Pinebook Pro due to the component pricing issues that
have plagued COVID. However, I suspect it is more likely a time-issue.
Manjaro is arch-based, rather than debian-based, and the ARM version
transitioned into the mainline manjaro/arch servers earlier this year
(which caused a number of upgrade issues).
Now that this transition is complete, it might be best to move to Manjaro
- I think it allows the HDMI port to work, for example. It uses a more
recent set of kernel drivers for the A64 SoC, I believe.
However, the best way to do this is open for debate. I do have a one or
two swapped-out eMMC modules (when people upgraded to 64GB their 16GBs
were spare). If anyone has a huge urge, but doesn't fancy doing it
themselves, I can use the USB-attached eMMC programmer I have here to
write up a fresh eMMC module and swap it.
I will, however, need to make a charge for this - it takes about 20
minutes (plus I'd really like to test the end results in a pinebook, which
means taking one apart and swapping the eMMC then config / testing /
updating). All in all, that's about a 1hr job I suspect (with testing and
P&P) or 30 mins without testing. So, that's be about 45ukp delivered, or
22.50ukp without testing (inc VAT and postage).
Otherwise, you can usually download a flash image for Manjaro pinebook arm
that can be put onto a microSD card, booted and auto-flash your own eMMC.
Just make sure to get the Pinebook 1080p version and not the pinebook pro
version (which they're keen to push now that they're the default OS on
Pro). PBpro has a completely different CPU in it, from a different
company, and is basically a completely different computer.
I hope this is helpful/useful.
