I also managed to do this on my new ARMX6 while introducing something
into the boot sequence. I regained control by repeated hitting the
Esc key while booting up. This resulted in a rudimentary screen
enough to remove the offending files and get a proper reboot.

Thanks. I managed to get in after disconnecting the network. I tried
hitting Alt-Break before it locked up and could terminate various
tasks but I couldn't find what was causing the problem. I seem to
recall that on older machines it was possible to boot from CD or
another device by holding down particular keys on startup.
These are good solutions.
My "if all else fails" approach is to take off the lid (when power is off)
and unplug the SSD's yellow SATA data cable.
When you power-on the computer will start as normal, then "stop" at
"Waiting for boot drive...".
Hold Escape, and it'll exit to desktop (may need *desktop if stuck at
command line).
SATA is "plug'n'play" on ARMX6, so you can literally connect the SATA data
cable whilst the machine is running, and your SSD will appear on the
iconbar. You can then restore your !Boot from your backup disc, or from
the "original disc image" copy in SD drive :1 (Recovery folder).
Theoretically, you can bypass !Boot by holding shift at startup. However,
I have found that this is not always guaranteed to work on USB-based
systems, as USB takes time to initialise, and may not have done so by the
point that the OS checks for Shift. USB enumeration seems further slowed
by USB hubs etc, and since most machines use a hub internally, or on the
motherboard, this is always going to reduce the window for this.
Holding Escape is also supposed to work, according to JB, but I've only
had success with this a couple of times.
