FWIW my first thought was the cable. In the past I had a 'red speckle'
effect, but a change of cable removed it.

The basic problem here is that the 'technical' specs for HDMI cabling are
in terms of electronic engineering, utter crap. So with devices and cables
it is a lottery if you are over the edge of what will work, or not.
