This seems to be a common problem and just to clarify, I have not had
the Spyder2 connected over a hub (although I later did try that too).

This is a recent motherboard (ASRock P67 Pro3, Sandy Bridge
architecture). Installation is old and calibrator has been functional
on an Abit IP35-E.

Other USB devices work flawlessly.

lspci shows these devices:
00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation Cougar Point USB Enhanced
Host Controller #2 (rev 05)
00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation Cougar Point USB Enhanced
Host Controller #1 (rev 05)

and lsusb shows these:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub

I tried disabling USB3 in EFI, and both enabling and disabling Legacy
USB Support

Could this be due to some kernel USB setting?
How about trying a PCI USB card?
USB over IP ( http://usbip.sourceforge.net/ ) served from the laptop
where it works could be an idea...
