I thought this would be the case... but wondered if there was
documentation about the compromises required for the perceptual intent
used for profiles conforming to ISO standards?
No, unfortunately the ICC keeps out of rules for the perceptual intent.
Basically all they say is "The colour rendering of the perceptual and
saturation rendering intents is vendor specific."
