My old PR-650 let you connect to the serial port only between two and five
seconds after powering up. Otherwise, you had to turn it off and on again or it
never looked at the serial port again. Other spectrometers insist on a pause
between each character when reading instructions from you.
I had a series of programs that would talk to spectrometers and colorimeters,
including the PR-650, the PR-701, the other Photo research spectrometers, the
Admesy Cronus, Klein, Jeti, the Konika-Minolta CS-100a, and maybe others. Each
program had a consistent(ish) set of instructions and could look for commands
and send replies to files, so I could control the instrument from a larger
program without having to write individual drivers. This software belongs to
FilmLight, but I suspect no-one uses it now so they might be happy to release
it. The Argyll tool could talk to a lot of the cheaper colorimeters.
We have also supported X-Rite devices, but these were a lot of work, and the
drivers seemed to change without notice. Serial over USB does seem to be the
best solution.
