There wouldn't be such a problem if the manufacturers open sourced
the drivers, or at least published the USB protocol. But
a number of them seem to think they have some sort of "secret sauce"
that would be revealed by the software, or perhaps they simply
want to try and control who can get access to their instruments.

If it's the latter, then you wouldn't think it's a competitive
market where they actually want to sell instruments. If it's the
former, I think they over value the driver aspect. 99% of instrument
secret sauce is in the hardware design, manufacture and production
calibration process. There doesn't seem to be much new in how
you actually convert raw measurement data into calibrated measurements.
