My thought was to use viewgam to compare an image gamut or color space gamut
with the Pointer's Gamut. Is there a better way forward?

Depends on what exactly you mean by "ICC profile". 99% of the time
people mean a Device Profile. But a Gamut is not a device profile - there is
no natural corresponding device space. One would have to manufacture
a device space values that correspond to the gamut surface values.
But why do this ? Simply represent Pointers gamut as 3D surface instead.
