Just to be sure I compiled DisplayCal on my Mint 20 machine, using the
pre-installed Python 2.7. I had to install a couple of requisites but after
that the generation and installation went fine. It starts and all seems
well, but I haven't tested it to any depth.

Have you tried it ? (i.e. downloaded DisplayCAL from <
https://displaycal.net/>
and run it ? It should offer to download the needed ArgyllCMS binaries.
If you're running on an x86 Linux machine, nothing stops you downloading
the ArgyllCMS binaries directly from the ArgyllCMS website either.
You aren't limited by whether a distro includes the code or not.
