There's nothing unusual going on - the light is diffracted and directed to a CCD sensor. The raw sensor readings have black subtracted from them, and are then re-sampled into calibrated nm bins (10nm or 3.3 nm for Argyll). Calibration multipliers are then applied. That's about it. (The Munki is slightly more complicated since it has a stray light correction step.) Graeme Gill.
