On the presser foot- try all the way down & then 2 clicks UP.  Next, (with a 
brand new needle- not threaded) do a "bottom center" & check to make sure that 
the needle is "dead center" of the needle plate hole.  If not loosen the screws 
that hold the needle plate on, adjust, and retighten.  This should help with 
this issue.  And if you are having lots of thread breaks after that, try using 
standard thread feed set at about 8 or 9 to start, instead of relying on auto- 
seems to help with caps.
