In DS you can save simple designs as decorative stitches.
then use them as repeats in when digitizing with the normal tools.
I have attached a quick example of a rope decorative stitch.
The simple shape in the middle is the saved decorative stitch.
the rope is it used and the spacing reduced to 50% or so.
