I don't know why you weren't able to use "split element" to break the holes
apart, but since you have something that works....
I don't understand the problem with pull comp either; usually the
percentage-based pull comp effects the object along the direction that the
stitches lie. So, for example, if the stitch direction line is 45° off
horizontal or vertical, that is the direction that the object size should
increase.
