hi Joe.  Yes this is part of the answer but I would like to encourage this 
guy to use propper fingering as well and then hopefully he will end up 
typing faster than he ever could struggling to see the keyboard with failing 
sight.

Graham,

only 25 per cent of an answer here.  On the mac, running Voice over, you
can press a keystroke after which, any or most of the keys when pressed,
are announced rather than sent to the operating system.  don't know about
typing tutors though, some time ago I did have some details, but I haven't
seen them for a while.  If you don't get anywhere, which I doubt will
happen, drop me a note, and i will ferret about.
