Hi Adrien -

I've been using the HP laptop for 5 years, pretty much as my sole computer, and it is still going strong [apart from the slowish boot up] so not giving up on it yet. I do have an Asus iii netbook, little used, no real use for it, and there does seem to be a problem with it's screen, I am told that there is a wide black band running across the screen, visually blocking out the middle section -

Hi Andy

To be honest with you, I have given up on portables because
they just seem to wear out far too quickly, I have gone back
to a desktop, seems to be more meaty. I have had samsung for
the last 5 or 6 years and before that it was toshiba,
wouldn't use dell or Lenovo, but this desktop seems ok
although they are very hard to find nowadays. It's just
personal choice, it depends on what you want out of a pc, I
still have my samsung nc10, one of them needs repairing, or
reloading but it is 5 years old and the fans started to go
and the operating system got corrupted, will get it sorted
sooner or later.

Hi Adrien -

Always helpful to get peoples experiences with computers.
It's been some
time since I was in the market for one, and I've no idea
what brands screen
users favour these days -

H Andy

No screen reader and mum only loads on it what she needs,
given the choice, I wouldn't buy hp or samsung, having
seen
the problems with mum's hp, I'd now stick with desktops
but
they are becoming few and far between.

Hi Adrien -

Has your Mum loaded it up with lots of programmes? Is she
running a screen
reader on it? -

Hi Andy.

Could you provide full specifications of your
laptop? that might go some way to providing an
explanation.

all the best,

Mo.

Hi all -

I did a time check this morning for the time
it takes from actually turning on the laptop, to
accessing
the desk top with JAWS13. Here's what I found:

Time taken from turning on to hearing start
up music for Vista, 70 seconds, approx.

Time taken from hearing Vista start up music
to JFW speaking the log-on screen, 2 minutes, approx.

Time taken from entering log-on password, to
desk top where JAWS announces "JAWS is ready...", 80
seconds, approx.

So, a total time of about 4.5 minutes. Do
others find this consistent with their booting/logging on
experience? It feels rather long to me, I am only
allowing
a
handful of apps to load at start up, but it might be that
Avast is doing a boottime scan ahead of my log on, so, it
would be interesting to hear how long it takes other
peoples
machines to reach the desk top, both those with Avast
installed, and those without it -
