The other thing is that the components in a laptop are titely packed and tend to heat up, which decreases their useful life. In a desktop theres more space, more room between the bits for air to circulate.

Getting back to the power, memory chip etc although laptop prices have come down I think I'm right in saying that a equivlent desktop will pound for pound be cheaper than a laptop.

As you and others have said it really depends on what you want to do with it. I'm lucky enough to have both a laptop and a desktop. The laptop is used when I visit libraries and archives and need to have my scanner with me. My desktop, is used for work but its on most of the time uploading and downloading. My laptop might be able to deal with this over a limited period of time but for long term use my desktop wins hands down and I spent nearly a grand and a half on the laptop.

Hi Derek

Laptops never used to be able to compete with desktop machines in the power stakes, unless of course you had an awful lot of money to buy a top-of-the-range effort. Nowadays, they are very powerful, and come with as much memory as desktop machines.

I still believe, however, that if you bought a desktop and a laptop with exactly the same specs, running exactly the same software, a desktop would be faster. I think it probably has something to do with the kind of chipset that each uses, and power consumption. Even though all the fancy figures equate to the same spec for each machine, the guts of a desktop are bigger and carry more clout.

That's just off the top of my head, so someone with more factual knowledge could answer this question more specifically.

Hi All
what does it mean when we use the term:
"powerful" regarding a computer.

A desk computer is said to be more "powerful" than a laptop
but in what way?
