Hi Jonathan,

You can turn your phone into a Wifi router without breaking any warranties.
Just buy Walking Hotspot or Joikuspot.

All the best

Steve

I can answer the last question with some authority here! As far as
mobile internet goes, I can strongly recommend the 3 mobile mifi unit
(I should point out that I'm not involved in it in any way!).
The device itself is actually called a Huawei E5830

Probably the first and only good thing 3 mobile have done, it works in
the following way:

Online or instore, you pay £69 for a little white unit - the unit
itself can be bought standalone for £50, but the £69 package includes
£30 of broadband, which is priced at £10/month or Gb, whichever you
use quicker. (Or £15 for 3Gb).

You then turn the unit on, activate it, and from then on everything
with a wifi connection can be connected as if it was a normal router -
the laptop doesn't care that ultimately it's a mobile signal - it just
sees a normal connection.

I bought several of these to allow listeners to trial a product (more
soon on that as promised!), but who didn't currently have broadband.
Although it can be a bit of a hassle for totally blind people because
the feedback of whether there is a signal or not is given by
red/green/blue light status, if the signal is reliable, once the thing
is on, there's no real need to turn it off.

The other advantage is there's not contract. If you don't need it for
a couple of months, then just don't top it up! There IS a contract
version which is £7.50/month for 1gb, but you're tied into an 18 month
contract, and I don't want/need/like that, although your situation
might differ.

More on the package here:
http://www.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi_plus_iPod_bundle - ignore
the bit about the ipod bundle at the top, the chart is at the bottom
of the page.

All that said, if you're using over 1Gb the costs can mount up.
Although officially not allowed, there are ways of "tethering" a
mobile phone to a pc, for those that have unlimited wifi on their
mobile.
But you need a cable and usually either a visit to a dodgy looking
stall at the local market or some unlocking software which will
probably invalidate your guarantee.

I've seen that BT have a mobile dongle. wonder if anyone's used it and what
it's like. I get the impression generally that dongles aren't great, but
seeing as I've an old mobile, (6600), I don't think using it as a modem is
the answer, but I stand corrected if I'm wrong. all help on this 1 certainly
appreciated.
