Hi Jonathan,

Not complicated at all.  Just install either and start.  By default it will
be an open network, but then Options, Settings is your friend.

Steve, Saqib - thank you both very much. I wasn't aware of either
Walkinghotspot or Joikuspot. They seem to be something I should look
into!
I found a video explaining it (apologies for people who can't see
this, but the talkthrough is good).

It does look a but more complex than the "take out of the box and turn
on" Huwai unit for my trial purposes, but it's definitely in my list
of things to explore - thanks so much!

Also, while I'm thanking people, I'd like to thank Andrew Summers for
pointing out the difference in pop3 download capabilities of US vs UK
Yahoo email accounts.
And well done to him for getting an answer out of them too - it's
something I gave up trying a long time ago!
