Yes, you can if you configure the options accordingly. You can set gw connect to the system tray (there is a configurable hotkey to bring it back into focus just as with original skype) and you can configure gw connect to announce contact status changes. This is done in its options also. This way the program is out of the way but you should get an announcement when your contact shows up online.
