Phil,
If your mute all check box is checked within sound volume control, it won't
matter if that volume wheel is all the way up. The sound is still muted. I
have often found that Windows or some other app has accidently checked this
box.
If your are using Windows XP. Do the following step by step.
1. hit the start button and touch R for Run.
The run command field should now be the focus. Type the following and hit
enter. Sndvol32 ... That is S N D V O L 3 2
The volume control dialog should now be your focus.
Now. Tab twice and touch the spacebar. This should uncheck that check box if
this is indeed your problem.
If you are running under Vista the steps might be different. I'm sure others
will assist if you are running Vista and require steps for that OS.

Hi Carol,

I will doublecheck but the volume adjuster is a wheel on the front of the
laptop which I've checked and it's on full volume.

I suspect it's going to need someone sighted who knows what they're doing to
take a look at it but that will have to wait....so in the meantime I'm stuck
with this dinosaur of a Dell desktop...still at least I can use it!!

All good fun, not!!

thanks anyway,

Phil

Phil,

I'd inadvertently hit the mute button on mine once and thought it wasn't
booting ...

If you have enough sight to know that the black screen remains, or if you
don't have a button you may have pressed for mute, then it's not that
problem. The volume settings could have got altered though.

Thought I'd mention these things just in case ... Hope you're back up and
running soon and that others have some good suggestions for you.
