OK, George, thanks for that. Let us know what your wife thinks of it when she gets one! (Now you'll have to buy it for her, won't you! Anyway, what else do you give the one you love who has almost everything!) <Smiles>

Thanks very much for that explanation anyway.

Hi Carol,

Following on from what Steve has said, I looked at the site.
I'll do my best to explain - but no allowances for
accessibility. And this is an extremely basic explanation.
Before we start, this is a £150 box, including VAT.

Basically, it's a smallish box that won't fill your room up,
which connects into a SCART socket on your TV.

There is then a connection to your PC system. It's not
entirely clear what it is. Your PC system must have a
broadband connection.

Now we must assume you are no longer in good old Britain,
but in some far flung hotel somewhere in never never land.

You are absolutely aching to see Corrie.

So you hook up your trusty lap top to the hotel's high speed
internet connection (at however much a day that costs) and
somehow link into your home computer system. (I therefore
suspect this means you may have to have a fixed IP address)

Provided you have left all the necessary equipment switched
on at home, you can then get the SlingBox to "stream" you
whatever you want to watch that is normally available on
your home TV.

But what seems odd to me is that normally your UPLOAD speed
is way below your download speed. So what's the quality
going to be like?

Well, I have no doubt that my wife will be wanting one, but
she (and all of you) will have to wait until August, which
is our wedding anniversary - and as luck would have it, our
13th.

George.

Steve,

Never heard of this before and obviously have missed a
message or two . . ..

I took a look at the WEB site and understand what it is but
of course, with
no eyes readily available, have no idea how large and what
stations you can
pick up from anywhere.

Further information, if you have it, would be interesting.

Also, do you know how accessible the software is for us?

Do you have one yet, or is it on the Christmas list?

Hi Adrian,

Orb is a completely different animal. What makes Slingbox
good is that
you
can plug it directly into your TV/Video/satellite box via
Scart, and then
network it, then view your TV over the web from your
satellite box
anywhere
in the world, as long as you have an Internet connection.
I don't think
you
can do that with Orb.

I am wondering though whether Slingbox is accessible.

Have a look though at http://uk.slingmedia.com for more
info.

All the best

Steve

Dean - I haven't tried slingbox but have played around a
bit with orb
which
does a similar thing certainly for music and transfering
files anyway, not
sure if it does tv/video. Although I have accessed it
remotely from
another
pc I haven't yet tried accessing it from my phone so don't
know about the
symbian client and talks, give it a try.

Hi,
Has anyone used a sling box to stream music or files to
their PC or to
their
phone from their PC? I know its available for series 60
mobiles but
wasn't
sure how the PC or the Mobile phone apps were for
accessibility.
