The lady from the Bank of England or may be she was from the Royal Mint said on In Touch that the notes were definitely not going to be the same size. I think she said the 10 and 20 were staying the size they are now. The £10 is going to have one block of dots on it and the 20 will have 2 blocks of dots.

Hello Clive, Eleanor and all,

Please, can someone with knowledge confirm what I heard off-list?

The suggestion is that all denominations of the plastic notes will be the same size. The distinguishing features will be variations on the theme of tactile markings as described below. Surely these markings seem destined to become less distinguishable as time and grime accumulate. Should this come to pass perhaps this useful strategy could be adopted wherever possible? Demand only £10 notes when withdrawing money from a financial outlet. Any change can then only have a single £5 note in it, which must then be stored in a separate place, perhaps a purse dedicated solely for storing proffered fivers.

One can imagine a panel of reasonably healthy and intellectually aware blind individuals declaring such notes as easy to identify. But then again is not selection onto such panels rather dependent on being, "confident and competent", in the first place? A case of, "Well they would, wouldn't they?"

Paul Benson.

Hi Eleanor,

I've had a feel of one of these too.

From my point of view, I don't have too much difficulty with it. I can feel the disc in one corner, and the slightly raised 5 in the other. It does feel a little like a receipt if I hold it by the middle of the note, but it has a much rougher surface all around the outside of the note, at least on one side. If in toubt, run yournail around the perimeter of the note.

However, I would say that these tactile features that distinguish the note from paper are quite subtle, and I do wonder how easy it will be for someone to handle with confidence if, for example, they have limited sensitivity in their hands, caused by diabetes, like their vision impairment. I'd like to hear from someone who is blind and has diabetes how they feel they'll be able to cope with it.

Best,
Clive

I have had an opportunity to look at and feel this new 5 pound note today. I have some residual vision, however,l however, I find it very difficult to believe that there has been input from organisations for the blind in relation to the design of this note. there has been some discussion on list about the note and all I can say is I will do my best to avoid having such a note in my purse! let's hope that when the new £10 note comes in in 2017 that it will be more user friendly to visually impaired and blind people.
