Although rather technical, there is an FAQ about dot net
here. It may give you some ideas.

Service Pack 3, English Version

turning automatic update off doesn't seem to me to be a wise
option. I'd
like to know what the update is for and then I'd want to be
able to choose
to instal it or not.
I wonder where it sits waiting to be installed, I haven't
found it in my
download programs where all the downloaded stuf goes to.
Where can I find more info about this thing? how would I
word it in google
to get there without having to wade through millions of
results containing
the word microsoft?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers now,
