Hi Marie,

Let me try an explain this in (hopefully) simple terms.

As you know, your hard drive usually carries the drive
letter C. If you have CD or DVD drive, that will usually
carry the letter D. Add a hard drive, and that might be E,
and so on.

But all the other machines on your small network will also
have drive letters as described above C:, D:, E: and so on.

Now, if you want to access data on another machine, you can
go the long way round, by going to "View Workgroup
Computers", selecting the computer, and then (assuming is
has been shared) selecting the appropriate disk drive you
want access to.

Or, you can "Map" a drive, and give it a letter unique to
your own system.

And so for example, you might map the C drive on your
partner's PC to the letter P on your system. That way, you
simply appear to have a P: drive as well as a C: and a D:
drive.

Are you still with me?

I won't go in to details right now, but subject to your
operating system and format of drive, you can apply the same
technique to what is called a "Share". That is to say you
don't share the ENTIRE disk drive, but only a part of it,
such as perhaps one folder and associated sub-folders.

I hope I've not muddied the waters for you here.

All the best,

George.

ok so far, but if I can access the drives on the network
by
specifying they should be shared in their properties
options,
why would I want to map them?what is this feature useful
for?
I thought you had to map network drives for them to be
able
to be shared, looks like I had the wrong end of the
stick!...
?Thanks for info.
