Whilst it is by no means compulsory or in every day sense necessary,
like nearly all the GUI based operating systems, you can get more out of
all of them if you know a little command line.  This is as true of Mac
as it is Windows as it is to Linux. 

The Mac fanboys might quibble about the share accorded of the desktop
O/S market "is still a very paltry 8%" and say it is a bit more than
that now.  Whilst it may be possible in theory to consider alternatives
to Windows for the vast majority this is still the most mature and
successful route, especially where access technology is involved.
