For future reference you might want to google for slipstream+XP and make yourself a rescue disc with all the service packs on it for ease of use if it happens again.

Hello listers,

Following on from Douglas's problem, I, too, have trouble with my Toshiba Satellite A60 Pro. Ironically, it's three years old. I installed AVG 8.0 yesterday and ran a full computer check for viruses and spyware. The results showed a clean bill of health. I tried to boot up today and the first time all I heard was the hard drive speeding up and slowing down and not much else, so after a few minutes I held the button in to shut down and rebooted. Now Windows starts and then suddenly shuts down with the message "System error". Looks like a full reinstall is the only way to solve the problem. fortunately I have all original CD's including the Toshiba recovery disc. I don't really mind, as this is the first major crash needing a full reinstall.
