Mo Quite correct. Pins 2 and 5 were for speech, and pin 3 for ring. If I recall correctly, It was only the master socket which had to have pin 3 connected. A telephone wire is made up of 4 cores, that's to say there are 4 cables within the telephone wire. As far as i understand it, there used to be something called the ring wire in BT telephone sockets. this wire would send a ring signal down 1 of the 4 wires in your telephone cable, causing the phones to ring. the other wires would be used to carry the voice signal. with modern telephone systems, BT have done away with the ring wire system, meaning that only 2 wires are used for telephones and sending the ring signal. the others i believe are used for broadband. this in short means that older sockets will not be compatible with newer telephone systems. Telephones can also conflict if you have more than a few phones attached to your master socket. you'll find that only 1 or 2 will ring, again probably because the lack of the ring wire. i would recommend buying a panasonic set of cordless phones and plugging them in to your master socket so you have 1 base and the others are on charging pods around your house. a reputable telephone engineer should also be able to rewire your sockets to fix the problem so they use the modern telephone system, though your master socket may need updating for this to work properly as modern sockets include filters for broadband etc to separate the broadband signal from the phone signal. all the best, Mo.
