Hi, vodafone family is absolutely brilliant actually. In many ways I prefer Orange. I prefer the way answerphone works, find the reception better, and prefer their customer services to Voda, but Voda isn't bad.

Hi Carol

I find it a doddle to be honest, and prefer it that way. I don't use my mobile for calls much, unless I'm out and need to order a taxi or something. I mainly use texts, so tend to buy a bundle of them. I have a top-up card that I can go into most shops and hand over with the amount I want to buy, but I also have my debit card linked with Vodafone so I can just use the automated service to top up my mobile on my own, and that's the method I far prefer. I just call 2345 free from my mobile, and it tells me my remaining balance, how many minutes I am from their lower rate, and how many texts I have left on my bundle. I've never yet run out of credit because I just know when I need to top it up.

When I was in hospital, I linked our mobiles to the Vodafone Family scheme, which allowed me to call three other Vodafone users at any time for up to 60 minutes. This was fantastic for me for the fiver I paid to do that for the month as it meant I could call Ian and my sister regularly. It also meant they could call me because they were nominated on my group. Perhaps it sounds a bit complicated, but it isn't, and I was able to set that up myself and cancel it when I came home as I didn't need it after that. I can tell you it saved us all a lot of dosh as I was always ringing Chris to tell her what was going on or else she would have driven the staff mad. And I could keep in touch with Ian when he was on his way up or going home on the train. Then I could talk to my son at night when he'd got home from work, and it just saved so much money and hassle.

Anyway, hope all this is of help to you or anyone else.

Jackie

Thanks, Jackie.

I am not too keen on going something like "Pay as you Talk" because of having to keep topping up. (Don't want to run out at vital points.) Do you find this to be a problem, or is monitoring and topping up just a breeze?

Hi Carol

I'm sure you'll get a lot of input from users on this one. I can only speak for the Pay-As-You-Talk setup I have with Vodafone, which suits me well. I used to be with O2, but don't find their Customer Services team particularly obliging, and certainly not the store in our area. Vodafone, on the other hand, have always been helpful, even if they do claim to know a lot more about TALKS than is actually the case. (smile).

I do know from my son's use of O2 that they charge from £25 per month for a SIM-only contract which you can opt out of after giving 30 days notice. But you may recall that young Ian didn't like this because he found it difficult to monitor the amount of texts and airtime he was using without speaking to them directly instead of calling an automated service.

If you shop around, do one operator at a time because if you go from one to another, they will completely throw you it's that much of a minefield. It's a case of swings and roundabouts I'm afraid. What one offers you as a good deal, another will try to better it and maybe leave out something you liked from the first network.

Oh happy hunting (smiles).

Jackie

Hi all,
I'm not very happy with Orange right now and won't bore everyone with the details... I'm wondering whether to return to 02 with which I was happy for some years and only moved because we got a better deal for two of us. I'm only looking for a low use tariff, with some occasional texts. Does everyone charge for their printed bills these days and does 02 still keep tracks on your usage and let you know of the best possible tariff for you?

Any comments from anyone who has recently looked at what's going would be most welcome.

Thanks.
