Hi Aman
I agree with you completely. But I think part of the reason these devices
are so outdated when they hit the shelves is due to the length of time it
takes the developers to get everything working that by the time they have a
working prototype to market, it has fallen way behind.
At this rate, I dont see a future for specialist devices because of cost,
and because users want mainstream hardware with accessibility features they
can use right out of the box. If you stick to a one size fits all approach,
it becomes too restricting and extremely expensive. I want to give the new
PC Compute Sticks time to bed down, then I will investigate one to carry
around with a couple of peripherals paired with it.
It is all interesting stuff, and I am thrilled that Braille has been a
prominent theme at this years CSun, but its still not affordable for the
majority of users, and that is so sad and a waste of developers time.
Kind Regards,
Jackie Brown

Hi Jackie and all,
You are, of course, perfectly right about the pricing, Jackie. There is,
though, something else I would raise if I may. I was somewhat astonished to
read the specifications of this tablet, putting the price entirely to one
side. I just bought a Kangaroo PC for $150. It has better specifications
than this tablet does. Compare the tablets specs
http://www.insidevision.fr/insideone_UK.html
to the Kangaroos specs
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856659001
<http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856659001&Tpk=kangaro
o> &Tpk=kangaroo
I understand that the market for devices for the blind is
small and that the price must, therefore, be high. More accurately, thats
what we are told. Im afraid I dont understand, however, why this unit, the
B2G from NBP, the new Humanware unit, and so on, have lower specifications
than far cheaper units available to the public. I asked this question on
the Android list and was, basically, told to shut up. I dont expect to get
any kind of answer, you understand, but it is a question which I think is
worth asking. Put aside the price, as I said, assume for the sake of the
argument that its £4000 because thats the lowest possible price the
companies can charge while still paying their employees. Cant they add less
than 5% and make sure the product is up to date when its released?

This looks interesting from the link you provided Ed. But these prices are
ridiculous to be honest, and so prohibitive for so many!
